Leg riding is a key part of top folkstyle wrestling and is used by the best pinners to dominate their opponents, yet many wrestlers do not master its uses and counters, and many even admit to feeling "lost" when their opponents or teammates use leg riding on them. This is exactly why it is great to be good at it! Stop feeling "lost" when people leg ride, and instead turn it into a powerful weapon in your arsenal! In the Fall of 2023, University of Wrestling will be offering a top level leg riding training all designed to help wrestlers work towards mastery of this key top system.
In this training segment, wrestlers will learn:
*effective setups to get the leg ride in
*safe riding strategies while leg riding
*anchors and anchor positions to stay in control while leg-riding
*breakdowns and setups for key pinning options from the leg ride
*techniques to create powerful top forward pressure

Brandon Ripplinger and Mike Ripplinger are two of the most respected high school and youth wrestling coaches in Utah. Mike was the head coach of Box Elder High School from 1985-2018 where his teams won six State Championships and where he was the 2005 NWCA National Head Coach of the Year. His teams were known for their numbers and for their tenacity and their consistent excellence over three decades during his tenure.
Brandon Ripplinger, Mike’s son, was the head coach at Viewmont High School from 2008-2022 where his teams won four State Championships and where he also ran one of the most successful youth programs and coached Centerville Junior High to multiple district championships. Both Mike and Brandon are known as “Coach Ripp” among their wrestlers and communities, a title they honor. While both Coach Ripps have their unique coaching styles, one thing they share is teaching a proven system for excellence in wrestling.
We are passionate about helping people understand and master the sport of wrestling, and to do so we use a "systematic" approach. A system of wrestling is not just a handful of moves and tricks, which is the approach many wrestlers take; instead, it’s a systematic approach to setting up your opponent with simple but proven techniques and then capitalizing on the opponent’s reaction to score points and pin, then repeating the process. The best wrestlers and coaches use a system.
The University of Wrestling provides specific trainings so you know exactly what you are going to learn and be working on. Want to get better at riding and pinning? Enroll in our pin camps. Want to improve your throws? Enroll in our upper body throws camp. The point is learning is better when it is specific and intentional. Because many times you know where you want to improve or need to improve, this gives you the option to take on the things that you want to learn. That's why it is called the "University". Watch for our upcoming courses and enroll in the ones that interest you most!
“Mike and Brandon are the golden standard for coaching in Utah!” -Jeb Clark, Head Coach, Payson High School
"I am so impressed by your camp and coaching. [My son] is learning so much about how to wrestle smart with his brain vs random moves he attempts to string together just to get a pin. We have traveled to other big name camps. My wife and I agree that you have been a bigger impact on our son in three short weeks. Thank you for such a great program." -Colten F., wrestling parent
“I have coached wrestling for 19 years and in those years have coached against the Ripplingers. From the dynasties of Box Elder and Viewmont wrestling programs and even to the recent district titles of the Centerville Junior High program, so much of their success can be attributed to Mike and Brandon. They know wrestling. Their combined wisdom is something special in their ability to teach competitiveness, technique, and passion for the sport of wrestling.” -Bo Roundy, Head Coach, Davis High School
“It is quite telling that when my boys have been asked to name one person who has been most influential in their lives, all three of them name Coach Ripp. Beyond his seemingly encyclopedic wrestling knowledge, it is apparent that he truly cares about the physical and general development of each wrestler, using wrestling as a vehicle to teach important and memorable life lessons, of which we are so grateful!” -Lisa Astling, parent of former wrestlers
“Coach Ripplinger brings out excellence on and off the mat in a way that endears him to wrestlers and parents. He is a gifted coach and elevates through words and example. We are so grateful he coached our boy!” -Cory and Becky Money, parents of former wrestler
